Faith Education

Learning in Community

St. Paul’s is a community that loves to learn, and we are a community of curious people. The Christian faith tradition is layered, complex, and beautiful. There are endless ways to learn about history, spirituality, theology, and practices for a faithful life. We enjoy asking questions big and small about who we are, who God is, why Jesus matters, and what we believe.

The Episcopal tradition was formed in England during the Reformation, trying to be a ‘middle way’ between Protestants and Catholics during a very divisive time. This means that Episcopalians often have different ways of believing, but a common way of gathering and praying. You will find that we enjoy asking questions, even the ones that might seem inappropriate to ask.

A person wearing religious attire sits on the floor of a church with a group of children and a few adults sitting around them. The group is gathered near the altar, which is decorated with green cloth and lit candles. The scene takes place inside a wooden-paneled church.

What is Faith Formation?

Faith Formation is a common term that we use for education about our spiritual and religious tradition. While the word formation can sound overly formal or intimidating, we use that word because it encompasses more than just ‘book learning’ and includes the kind of learning we gain from community, practice, and prayer. Faith formation at St. Paul’s includes:

  • Bible study and book study small groups for adults
  • Presentations and classes
  • Children’s Church and Godly Play for Children
  • Religious education for teens through youth group and Confirmation
  • Spiritual practice groups
  • New member’s cohorts

Why is Faith Formation Important?

Life can be chaotic, painful, beautiful, and mystifying all at the same time. We believe that a rich spiritual life helps us approach life with resilience, joy, and hope. Together we gather to learn from each other and from our tradition about what a rich spiritual life can look like. Knowing and being known by God can help us experience joy more deeply, can support us during difficult times, and offers us solid ground from which to serve others.
