The St. Paul’s Church Scholarship Fund

Because education is one of the most important elements of a successful society and a key factor in the well-being of a community, the Mars family has established a Scholarship Fund for members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In so doing, others are encouraged to contribute to this Fund to provide for future learning opportunities.

The income from the Fund will be used to assist selected applicants to attend a post-secondary institution of their choice. Graduating seniors from high school or high school graduates, of any age, are eligible to apply. The scholarship recipients will be chosen by a committee of people who also are members of St. Paul’s Church and/or members of the Mars family.

The criteria to be considered are:

  1. Active church participation
  2. Completion of high school or GED
  3. Demonstrated interest in completing a college or trade-oriented education process
  4. Submitted recommendations

The awards are renewable annually for 4 academic years.

Application Process

Applications forms are available through our website, stpaulsduluth.org, click on the Connect tab then Scholarship, and must be submitted to the scholarship committee before March 15.

Selection Process

Applicants must have demonstrated participation in the life of St. Paul’s Church, for example serving as an acolyte, nursery attendant, choir member, usher, assisting with special events, etc. They must also submit the completed application, as well as two letters of recommendation: one from a counselor, teacher or coach from their high school; and one from an unrelated, adult member of St. Paul’s Church.

Scholarship Awards

Applicants will be notified in April, and each award winner will receive a personal letter describing the details of the award. The amount of the award will vary each year, depending on the number of scholarship recipients and the investment returns received by the Scholarship Fund.

Award Payments

Annual awards will be paid directly to the scholarship recipients, one half in August and the other half in January.

Recipient Obligation

A recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student or in an approved trade program throughout each term and is eligible to receive the award for a total of 4 academic years. However, a student in a 5-year program will be considered for the 5th year. The student shall be responsible for returning to the committee the scholarship’s proportionate share of any tuition refunds made by the institution if the student was not attending full time or did not complete any given term. Each student shall be responsible for having an official transcript sent to the church office at the conclusion of each school year.

Renewal

Prior to the end of the school year, eligible students will receive a renewal notice, which they must respond to by July 15, to the St. Paul’s Scholarship Committee. Renewals will be considered dependent on the transcript received. Continued membership in St. Paul’s Church and participation in church activities to the extent possible will be required.
